Series Of Unfortunate Mistakes

April 24, 2009

Me and my boyfriend were riding on the Indore-Dewas Bypass recently, slightly drunk and romancing. Don’t get ideas, just some lovey-dovey cheesy stuff. We were chased and cornered by three robbers on two bikes. Boy! We got mugged!

At first they said, they stopped us because we were doing “curious stuff” and threatened to get us arrested. I was so high, took me a moment to even realize what that mean. Then I said, “Yes, lets call Ramesh Uncle, he is a police officer. Let’s call him, right now!!” But by the time I’d got myself to say that, they had taken away our bike keys and were already slapping the courage out of my dear boyfriend. And because of one of those thunderous slaps, his specs had fallen off. Now, he was slightly drunk, in the dark, with a drunken young lady with him and his specs gone. I can’t start to imagine how helpless he must have felt in that moment. I don’t have any Ramesh Uncle, by the way. But it worked. They stopped slapping and the boyfriend managed to get the keys back.

Now they snatched my purse. To my boyfriend’s plight, I became the superwoman trying to snatch back the purse, screaming curses at the top of my voice, I took away the robbers’ bike keys trying to stop them and asking my boyfriend to call the police. I’m told I cursed and threatened, as I don’t know what words my screams formed that night, I was that high. The robbers managed to escape because my boyfriend grabbed me and pulled me away from them.

Now I thank my boyfriend for stopping me considering the horrific possibilities of those dark moments and the things that could have happen to us if those people had guns or knives and had hurt us. I usually never take off my watch, but that day I was feeling uncomfortable and kept my dear darling expensive watch in that purse. All we really lost of value was the watch, as all purses really hold these days are license photocopies and plastic money.

Accidents don’t happen when only one thing goes wrong. Accidents usually happen when a lot of things go wrong, simultaneously. We weren’t just riding in the wrong place at the wrong time. We were drunk. We were not just drunk; I was foolish enough to affront three young men with my little muscular power especially when I was drunk.

I do have two particular regrets, however. I wish I hadn’t lost that precious watch my brother had gifted me. And I hopelessly regret not having made creative use of the four inches of heels that I was wearing. Though reality may be slightly different, I feel better telling myself and others that I am the Superwoman who has the superpower to scream and I just saved my boyfriend’s life!
